Stumbled upon a free public rock concert in Hamburg
Mike - Face pic
[info]sluggobear

I love little surprises like this. As I was walking around Hamburg, I heard some loud music echoing down the street. I walked toward the sound, and discovered a big, free public rock concert going-on at the Town Hall square.

I only stayed for about 20 minutes, and I hadn't heard of the band that was playing, but they were actually pretty good, and the vibe was great. Lots of people were out, drinking beer and having fun with their friends.

I headed down to Willi's Bar, as I understood it might be a bear night there. Sure enough it was. I ordered a beer with lemonade, as is popular here in summer, and hung-out for awhile. A few guys introduced themselves; they were very polite and friendly, and eager to answer my questions about Hamburg.

After that I went back to the hotel, with a pit-stop at the pharmacy. With the help of a very friendly pharmacist (and the Internet), we figured-out which medicine I was looking for (Sudafed Sinus, aka Mucinex, aka guaifenesin), which was sold here as a syrup made by Vicks. So I downed that, along with the Zyrtec I'd brought from home. My allergies are still acting-up, and I needed something!

It seems like it was easier to find English-speakers and signage in Berlin, than in Hamburg. Still, there are lots of people that do speak English here.

I put my head down on the pillow at the hotel and zonked-out immediately... Happy Friday to all!

Doves concert

Doves

Thursday night I went to see the band Doves with [info]kingfuraday and his friend Lance, and Lance's friend Kevin. If you haven't checked this band out yet, I highly recommend them. Think Elbow mixed with Coldplay, U2, maybe even a dash of Radiohead.

Their current album Kingdom of Rust has caught my attention in a big way; it's dreamy, catchy and beautiful, with gorgeous harmonies and artful guitar work. (Get the album on iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon) Track highlights include:
  • Jetstream
  • The Greatest Denier
  • Birds Flew Backwards
  • Spellbound
  • Compulsion
Hell, get the whole album. It's awesome. (Their other albums are amazing, too.)

The band describes the track Jetstream like this:

Being fans of the Vangelis film score, 'Blade Runner', we always wanted to write an imaginary song for the closing credits on Ridley Scott's classic.

I think that description is pretty accurate. They opened their concert with it, and it blew my mind.

Not to mention their lead singer/bassist Jimi Goodwin is freakin' hot. (That's him in the photo above.) After the San Diego concert, he did an interview with the local radio show Big Sonic Chill. (You can hear the interview here.)

Doves just started their US tour (along with a few Canada and U.K. dates, too). If you have the opportunity, definitely check-out their show. (My only complaint was that it could've been a little longer.) Highly recommended!

Music I'm listening to
Mike - Face pic
[info]sluggobear
Music I've been listening to/sampled recently:
  • Black Eyed Peas: new single "Boom Boom Pow." It sucks.
  • Marilyn Manson: new single "We're From America." I'm not impressed.
  • Eminem: new single "We Made You." Tired.
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs: new album "It's Blitz." I'm digging it.
  • Doves: new album "Kingdom of Rust." I'm really digging this one!
  • Cassettes Won't Listen: "Small-Time Machine." Totally digging it. (It came out in 2008.)
  • Mstrkrft: new album "Fist of God." Booty-shaking to it right now. Oowa!

Random stuff
Mike - Hug
[info]sluggobear
Random:
  • I don't like the new Staind single. Cheese-fest.
  • The game "Rockband" is the karaoke of the 2000's.
  • I'm an ombudsman.
  • See Eeyore as Captain EO! (YouTube, 1:15, work-safe.)
  • Just re-discovered an old favorite song by Public Image Ltd.: Covered. (Rhapsody or iTunes.) ("I give, I give!") And such great lyrics, too. Listen to it loud!
  • I have a little cold.
  • My iPhone 3G got flaky yesterday. When I tried to sync, it kept saying the disk could not be read, or written to. Tried powering-off/on several times to no avail. Had to reset via iTunes. It seemed to be working fine, but now some of my contacts are coming-up as "Unknown." Harrrumph. Intermittently over the last few months, the phone would mysteriously be no longer activated. (It would re-activate a few minutes later.) Still, compared to my previous cell phones, the iPhone has been amazingly stable and reliable overall.
  • A disquieting video: Satan in claymation, something to do with Mark Twain. (YouTube, 5:00, work-safe.)
  • Beautiful art: The Cerebral Prostitute. (Image, work-safe.)
  • I ran across this quote. I don't know where it came from, but it sums-up my beliefs succinctly: "Everything does not happen for a reason. There is no karma. Dreams don't always mean something. Good and bad shit happens to everyone. It's not exactly random, but it sure-as-hell ain't programmed or managed."
  • Sometimes bears throw more attitude than so-called twinks.
  • A favorite Aimee Mann lyric: "You don't know, so don't say you do."
  • Meet the world's longest URL.

Possibly my favorite album this year
Mike - Cool in SF

This might possibly be my favorite album of 2008: Flight of the Conchords (by Flight of the Conchords).

Track highlights:
  • Foux du Fafa
  • Inner City Pressure
  • Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros (feat. Rhymenoceros and the Hiphopopotamus)
  • Mutha'uckas
  • Robots
  • The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)
Check it out on Rhapsody or iTunes.

Obsessed with this song
Toaster
[info]sluggobear
So I'm kind-of obsessed with this song, ever since I heard an 8 second clip of it on the MTV Europe Awards show tonight. It's by a Lithuanian band called Happyendless, and it's officially hijacked my brain.

(The music video is fun, but not as important as the music.)

(The title is "Power Forever," YouTube video, 3min 30sec, work-safe.)

Oh yeah. In 4 hours I'll be 35 years-old. Oowa!

New Nightmare Before Christmas music: "Nightmare Revisited"
Oingo Boingo - Cat Skull
[info]sluggobear
You might've missed it, but an album called Nightmare Revisited was recently released by Disney, and it has a lot of cool new stuff. It features covers by Polyphonic Spree, Korn, Rise Against, Amy Lee (from Evanescence), the Plain White T's and DeVotchka, among many others.

Film composer Danny Elfman says this release shouldn't be confused with last year's 13th Anniversary Special Edition CD. "The approach in every song is different [here]. Instead of just covering the songs, they turned groups loose on the score itself." The results are fun, odd, interesting, even inspired.

Danny himself contributes to the new album as well. From the Disney website: "Danny Elfman returns to recapture the musical landscape he masterfully created for the original The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack with two brand new recordings of Opening and Closing."

The only recycled material here is Marilyn Manson's odd but clever cover of This is Halloween. If you're an old-school Oingo Boingo fan, you might recognize the various musical homages scattered throughout the song.

Definitely recommended!

Listen to it now on iTunes, Rhapsody (free!), visit the official website, or use the handy "CLICK TO PLAY AUDIO" link below.

Ian Rogers on the death of the music business: "I Don't Care"
Mike - Face pic
[info]sluggobear
Ian Rogers on the death of the music industry:

I don’t care.

The lamenting we read in the press is not the story of the new music business. Continuing to talk about the health of the music industry on these terms is as if we’d all been crying about the dying cassette business in 1995. The difference is that when we moved from cassette to CD the winners were the same (big companies who owned access to cash, distribution, and marketing) and the definition of winning was the same (more units sold for these big companies).

As I’ve been saying for years, the physics of the media space have changed and you shouldn’t expect the winners or even the definition of winning to stay constant, so simply looking at how iTunes replaces CDs doesn’t tell the entire story.

I see news about the health of the music industry as defined by the stock price of WMG or quarterly earnings of UMG, Sony, and EMI every day. What I don’t see, apart from a few articles on Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, is an update on how the world is changing from the artist point of view. But I tell you, when I talk to managers and artists they feel it, they feel an ability to take their careers into their own hands, to redefine what success means for them, and that is the emergence of the new music business.

-------

Digital sales don’t make up for physical? From the artist perspective they certainly can, and quickly. David and Brian keep the majority of the profits, and (via Topspin at least) are paid within sixty days of the fan purchasing (no wait for recoupment and complex royalty accounting). When your costs are low your royalty rate high and your channel direct, the marginal profitability from the artist perspective can be far different than in the old model, to be sure.

And where the mass-marketed approach was low-margin from the artist perspective, the target-marketed approach can be much higher margin (which is how Joe Purdy buys a house on his iTunes sales). Topspin believes there is an entire middle class of artists for whom the system hasn’t worked in the past who will be empowered by this new model.

Again, there are only two players in the music business that matter at the end of the day: the artists and the fans. The rest of us . . . either add value today with a compelling service or we die. And I’m perfectly happy with that.

More updates
Mike - Fuzzbelly sketch close
[info]sluggobear
Ha! I guess I had just a few more updates!
  • One of my extra hard drives crashed. It started making clicking sounds. I was able to recover like 90% of the data, but it looks like a couple videos are lost. The funny thing is, this was my backup drive. But what good is a backup drive if you don't have the original on your main drive (or somewhere else?!) Feh. I guess I should be doing an extra backup and storing it somewhere else safe.
  • Hopefully you'll see some more Thursday tips soon. Just been crazy busy.
  • Went to the beach this weekend and got sunburnt. It hurts to move, ouch!
  • A large portion of my wardrobe is now officially too big for me. I think most people would be excited about the prospect of getting a new wardrobe. But I hate clothes shopping and don't have piles of cash to spend. On the bright side, I kept some of my old jeans (size 38 and 40) and shirts (XXL) that finally fit again!
  • Lately I find myself listening a lot to these artists (not even new material, necessarily, just been listening to 'em just cuz) Flight of the Conchords, Elbow, Hooverphonic, Depeche Mode, The Ting Tings, Queens of the Stone Age, Kenna, The Presets, Recoil, Stevie Wonder, Beck, Burial, Junkie XL, Tears for Fears. I don't know why those bands specifically. That's just what's been spinning.
  • The new Metallica single sucks.
  • Going to Vegas with my Dad in October. Woo-hoo!
  • If you're into image editing, check-out this nifty video about seam carving.
  • I accidentally missed my assigned day of jury duty last week. They are pretty flexible though, and rescheduled me for another date in about a month.
  • OMG I can't believe I didn't post a link to this video a few months back: Sophisticated Boom Boom by [info]intoutdoors and [info]xxtapemakerxx. (I make a goofy cameo appearance!)

Get the f___ out! Danny Elfman has a new single out! It's called The Little Things, and it's from the new Wanted film soundtrack. It features Danny himself on vocals and everything.

(It's not like amazing or anything. I guess it's just nice to hear from him again.)

Foo Fighters Concert
Mike - Surreal
[info]sluggobear

The Foo Fighters rule.

Went to see them with [info]maverick1303 , [info]danlmarmot , [info]pinner123 , [info]cavbear28 , and non-LJers tatcubsd, cyclingmikeinsd and djv69sd (sdmillertime went too, but didn't sit with us.)

The band played a long set... about 2 hours... with songs spanning their entire repertoire.

Highlights were hearing My Hero and Skin and Bones in an amazing acoustic set; an inspiring performance of Times Like These, with just about everyone singing along; and loud, rocking renditions of The Pretender and All My Life.

But for me, the very best part was the opening of the show... they kicked things off with Let it Die*, my favorite song off the new album. That was just such a rush! And there's something liberating about shaking your fist and shouting back at the stage at the top of your lungs with the song... alongside your partner and 10,000+ other fans... "WHY'D YOU HAVE TO GO AND LET IT DIE?"

Undoubtedly the crowd favorite (and showstopper) was the acoustic version of Everlong. It was stripped-down at first... just Dave Grohl and his guitar. Every eye was fixed on him, and the crowd sang along in an almost reverent, respectful way. Then the song swelled to a big, loud dramatic finish, with the rest of the band rocking hard. It was perfectly executed.

Dave's vocals were pretty-much right-on all night. I won't say his vocals were "perfect," nor will I say he hit every note. He's not a virtuoso or anything, but his voice just fits the music perfectly. He growls and yells in one song, but then turns-around and gives you a melodic, smooth ballad for the next.

And Dave, it must be said, is just a fucking ball of energy... a lightning bolt, the focal point of the band and the crowd. He seemed to be soaking-up the crowd's energy, then spitting it back out at them as fast as he could. He did not phone it in, nor did the band.

Indeed the only "weak" part of the concert was probably the lights and video. Don't get me wrong. I don't think the band requires any fancy, effects-laden stage production or mammoth video screens. However I thought the staging from their last SD show was much better; it perfectly complimented the performance without being too flashy. This time around, the lighting felt quite uninspired, and it looked as if not much time or effort was put into the on-screen visuals.

I'm also not sure about the pacing of the set list. It wasn't bad really. Just seemed slightly out of order.

One more minor gripe. I used to love the song Monkey Wrench but here it felt obligatory and a bit tired... I could've done without it.

All that being said, it was a rush... a great show, lots of bang for the buck, and some great songs to sing-along to. And it seems like at this point in history there are very few bands that can do a big rock show like this. (Perhaps U2, and maybe a few others.)

The opening acts were Against Me!, who did an admirable (if somewhat longish) set, while Serj Tankian's performance just fell completely flat on its face, despite a multitude of stage theatrics, costumes and dramatic lighting.

I was happy though because I had a pretty good energy level all night, despite not having slept lately at all. (I didn't tucker-out this time, yay!)

Anyways, we had an amazing time! I'd recommend checking-out the Foo if they come to your town.

* Note: that video is actually from their recent show in Nashville... unfortunately I couldn't find a decent quality video from the SD show.

(Disclaimer... neither the photo, nor the video, are mine.)

"Where The Birds Always Sing"

The Cure: "Where The Birds Always Sing"

the world is neither fair nor unfair
the idea is just a way for us to understand
but the world is neither fair nor unfair
so one survives
the others die
and you always want a reason why

but the world is neither just nor unjust
it's just us trying to feel that there's some sense in it
no, the world is neither just nor unjust
and though going young
so much undone
is a tragedy for everyone

it doesn't speak a plan or any secret thing
no unseen sign or untold truth in anything...
but living on in others, in memories and dreams
is not enough
you want everything
another world where the sun always shines
and the birds always sing
always sing...

it doesn't mean there has to be a way of things
no special sense that hidden hands are pulling strings
but living on in others, in memories and dreams
is not enough
and it never is
you always want so much more than this...

an endless sense of soul and an eternity of love
a sweet mother down below and a just father above
for living on in others, in memories and dreams
is not enough

you want everything

another world
where the birds always sing
another world
where the sun always shines
another world
where nothing ever dies...

Coachella 2008
Mike - Bleh and Hmmmph
[info]sluggobear
So by now everyone knows that the Coachella lineup has been announced.

I'd definitely like to see The Breeders, Minus the Bear, Deathcab, Kraftwerk, Junkie XL, Dimitri from Paris, Sia and Madness. (Madness, believe it or not, would be a ton of fun... and not just cuz of "Our House.")

And I bet I'd go to see The Raconteurs, Fatboy Slim, Stars, Roger Waters, and I'd probably like them all just fine, too.

Love and Rockets had a few great songs, but I think they're being promoted on the bill at a somewhat higher level than they probably ought to.

The Streets ought to be interesting. (I've sampled some of his stuff before, but I found it hard to listen to a British white bloke rapping. Not saying it's bad, just sayin'.)

And can Portishead really be a headliner? (I mean, yah, cool, trippy, yay. But not a headliner.)

And um, Jack Johnson? Are you fucking serious? (I wish I had veto power, cuz I'd use it. If we had to choose a more pop-ish headliner, I think Alanis might actually be kinda fun.)

Wish List

I was just responding to [info]heypyro's post on the subject, and sorta came-up with a pseudo-wish list:

Gorillaz, Spoon, Beck, Fountains of Wayne, Kenna, Seal, Powder, LCD Soundsystem, Muse, Queens of the Stoneage, Blaqk Audio, Poe, Earlimart, Guster, Hooverphonic, Linkin Park, She Wants Revenge, Dave Gahan (his second solo album is much better than the first)

(Then again, Poe hasn't had any releases in a long time. And I didn't like the last Linkin Park record as much as I liked the first two.)

Hmm or maybe reunions of The Tubes, Sisters Of Mercy, Communards, Electronic, Everything but the Girl?

Of course Oingo Boingo was always my favorite live band, but Danny Elfman has reasonably assured us that a reunion will never happen. (For now there's an active Boingo tribute band, as well as a few semi-reunion shows in LA without Danny.)

Maybe I'm dreaming.

Anyways, I'm kinda sorta disappointed with the lineup overall. Maybe I've just been spoiled by amazing lineups in the past? I remember a few years when both Coachella and San Diego Street Scene had lineups that were nonstop, all-star, no-holds barred bullet lists of awesomeness.

Then again, as [info]gibbo67 is quick to remind me, half the fun of Coachella is discovering new music you didn't know about.
