This is the best letter ever!  The funniest thing I've read in a long time!  Brian got this in the mail yesterday.  (I hope I get one too.)

Check out Brian's post... and always remember: DO govern yourself accordingly!

Hacking Bear411 is WRONG
The Island
[info]sluggobear
When you're unhappy with a service (such as Bear411), there is a right way to go about it.  Report your concerns to the owner.  Alert others.  Take your business elsewhere.

There's also a wrong way to do this.  Apparently someone has taken it upon themselves to exploit a security hole and start causing havoc on Bear411.  Several friends of mine have now reported having their account hacked and/or changed.  Apparently there have been some crazy things happening with buddy lists, misrouted messages, and possibly even passwords being revealed in plain text.

One friend has reported seeing this message being sent-out:

"Hello from a random person. Not a hacker or anything, just someone you don't know (and neither does this account holder from whom I am writing). Bear411 has no security at all, even a stupid idiot like me can break right in and have full access to anyone's account. Read about it at http://sultmhoor.livejournal.com/44370.html"

I don't know who is perpetrating this, but this is just plain wrong.  It is immoral, illegal and irresponsible.  I can't believe that someone would stoop to this level.

To whomever is doing this: I hope you get caught.

Some additional discussion on the matter:

The Bear411 firestorm has been blown out of proportion.

I've been reading the chatter about the recent Bear411 uproar, and I keep seeing this question in various forms:

"Why are you making such a big deal about this?  Why don't you just take your business elsewhere and shut-up about it?"

Bear411: A personal e-mail from Greg, and the Ultimate "Fuck You"
Zorak
[info]sluggobear
Yesterday I was surprised to receive a personal e-mail from Greg, the webmaster of Bear411.  Apparently he's been reading all the hubbub on LiveJournal (I'm not surprised).  It seemed like perhaps he was reaching-out... maybe he wanted to respond to recent criticism.

Greg noted that I was the only one he saw that defended him (on any level) throughout the firestorm of LiveJournal posts against Bear411.  (I guess he saw my one post where I defended his right to run a business.)

This e-mail was an unexpected turn; it seemed that perhaps Greg was changing his attitude a bit.  I thought, for a brief moment, that I had his direct attention... and perhaps this was an opportunity to get through to him... to explain why we are all so frustrated.  Greg even conceded to stop blocking words like "ugly" and "faggot" from Bear411 instant messages.

But my little spark of optimism was effectively destroyed as Greg continued to brush-off criticism, clutching to his status of being the "#1 bear site."  He then proceeded to delete my Bear411 profile without any e-mail or notification.  (And all of this on the eve of February 14th, so I won't get the satisfaction of deleting the profile myself.  Ahh, well...)

For a moment I thought maybe Greg was listening.  Instead what I got from him was one big, giant "FUCK YOU."

He deleted it, not me.

Defending Bear411 for a moment
Mike - Face pic
[info]sluggobear
In this great firestorm that is the anti-Bear411 movement, I think there have been some valid complaints... but also some unreasonable ones.  For this reason, I want to analyze some of the claims... and today I am actually going to defend Bear411.  (On this week's episode of "Sluggo's Point/Counterpoint!")

An article about Bear411
Mike - Face pic
[info]sluggobear
Received this note from a friend.  If you're interested in being interviewed, please e-mail me at sluggobear at the proverbial yahoo dot com.  Then I'll put you in touch with him.
"Here's the deal - I am writing an article on Bear411 for A BEAR'S LIFE magazine. Not a hatchet piece, but certainly not a love letter like the interview in our first issue. I'm going to look at the history of the site, the positive and negative aspects, including how Bear411 is run, it's controversial policies regarding profiles and messages, the current movement for a mass exodus on Valentine's Day and April 11, etc.

I'm going to interview users of the site, webmasters of the various anti-Bear411 sites, and hopefully Greg himself if he'll consent."

Since Bear411 filters out certain websites and keywords, you may have difficulty telling your friends that you are leaving Bear411.  May I suggest sending the following message to your friends.  This *should* allow you to get the message out, at least until Bear411 starts filtering this out too.

I'm leaving 411.  Please send me your e-mail address so we can keep in touch.

I was going to suggest a mass exodus from Bear411... but it looks like some folks beat me to it!

They've even got a date... February 14th...

Oh, the irony!

I mentioned I was doing some research myself... been trying out this BearCiti.com website, and I really like it!  They've basically addressed every gripe I had with Bear411.

Why I'm abandoning Bear411:
  • Poor customer service
  • Profiles deleted with no warning
  • Profile altered without person's knowledge, no warning
  • CENSORING / Messages gone missing inexplicably
  • Technical problems
  • No/poor response to support requests
  • Sucky/gaudy user interface
  • Poor grammar
Mass defection of Bear411 customers coming soon?

The Bear411 saga...
Mike - 50's Alien Movie
[info]sluggobear
I sent the following IM to Greg, the webmaster of Bear411:
Greg,

I think your note about Internet Explorer 7 is misleading.

Yale has problems with their own internal business applications. They will need to modify their applications to make them work with IE7. Microsoft isn't going to make any changes that will change anything for Bear411.

Greg's response:
it is not... i posted it after someone who experienced problem with the chat after upgrading from IE 6 to IE 7 ...
and he downloaded firefox and told me to advice people about that.

not everybody has problem using IE7 with BEAR411 , i don t know why... but it seems something has changed in their configuration...

Bear411 Bullshit.

WTF!?

I use Firefox myself. Still, I can't help but be angry about this note that appeared on Bear411 today.

Hello, IE7 is still the dominating browser, and people who aren't tech-savvy are going to be misled.

To claim that Yale recommends not using IE is irresponsible. Yale has internal business applications that aren't working.

Then to say "let's hope MS will fix that problems soon" [sic] just kills me. Microsoft isn't going to fix anything that's gonna help Bear411 users.

P.S. Bear411 is working for me in IE7 just fine.  Certainly I don't mind seeing more people switch to Firefox.  I just hate miseducating the public.  It's a pet-peeve of mine.
