Video: Blacklight art exhibit in Berlin

Went to this trippy art exhibit where everything was either
blacklight-responsive, glow-in-the-dark, or self-illuminating. They featured
all kinds of artwork... from paintings to life-size dioramas with moving
pieces.

The centerpiece of the exhibit was this large room with big wall paintings
and a giant, three-dimensional string sculpture, suspended from the ceiling,
which glowed in the dark and rotated... all while a trippy ensemble played
live music using synthesizers, didgeridoo, voice and drums. (And yes,
incense was everywhere.)

Watch the video on posterous.

At one end of the room, they even had a "rabbit-hole" sized door, where you
could crawl in and see a secret art display.

A beverage bar served-up drinks and souvenirs.

Pretty trippy.

A short stop-motion video that my sister [info]interesse made. (YouTube, 42 seconds, work-safe).

I wish I were that creative! And I love the music!

Beautiful.

The Cure: "Where The Birds Always Sing"

the world is neither fair nor unfair
the idea is just a way for us to understand
but the world is neither fair nor unfair
so one survives
the others die
and you always want a reason why

but the world is neither just nor unjust
it's just us trying to feel that there's some sense in it
no, the world is neither just nor unjust
and though going young
so much undone
is a tragedy for everyone

it doesn't speak a plan or any secret thing
no unseen sign or untold truth in anything...
but living on in others, in memories and dreams
is not enough
you want everything
another world where the sun always shines
and the birds always sing
always sing...

it doesn't mean there has to be a way of things
no special sense that hidden hands are pulling strings
but living on in others, in memories and dreams
is not enough
and it never is
you always want so much more than this...

an endless sense of soul and an eternity of love
a sweet mother down below and a just father above
for living on in others, in memories and dreams
is not enough

you want everything

another world
where the birds always sing
another world
where the sun always shines
another world
where nothing ever dies...

(disclaimer... not my photo. Just really enjoyed it, and really love this Cure song.)

Don't Go In the Basement
Oingo Boingo - Cat Skull
[info]sluggobear
Check out surreal and trippy images in this clip from the animated short Face Like a Frog, circa 1987, which appeared on MTV's Liquid Television.

The short was created by Sally Cruikshank, who also worked as an animator on Sesame Street in the 1990's, and did animated sequences for several films including Twilight Zone: The Movie and Mannequin.  The music is written and performed by Oingo Boingo, though they performed under a pseudonym at the time.

(YouTube, 1 min 15 sec, work safe).

More Boingo/Elfman news and interesting clips behind the cut, if you're interested. )

Team Colors
Mike - Fuzzbelly sketch close

This is a clip called Team Colors.

The artist says "Team Colors is meant to show how the marketing of crude commodities (gas, soft drinks, cheeseburgers) results in a choice between various color schemes, or ‘teams’."
See more from Mark Luthringer's Ridgemont Typologies

Artist Statement about this collection (which includes some other great work):

The typological array’s inherent ability to depict prevalence and repetition make it the perfect technique for examining the excess, redundancy, and meaningless freedom of our current age of consumption. Part of my intent with this work is to answer the question implied by the title of Robert Adams’s book What We Bought: If there is some kind of big sellout occuring, what are we getting in the deal?

The typological form achieves an uncanny synergy and resonance with this subject matter because it mimics the mental images I suspect many of us form as a way of ordering the chaos of abundance that surrounds us. We can’t help but form in our heads lists, groups and categories based on product, brand, price point, style, market segment, country of origin, etc.
