WTF!?

I use Firefox myself. Still, I can't help but be angry about this note that appeared on Bear411 today.

Hello, IE7 is still the dominating browser, and people who aren't tech-savvy are going to be misled.

To claim that Yale recommends not using IE is irresponsible. Yale has internal business applications that aren't working.

Then to say "let's hope MS will fix that problems soon" [sic] just kills me. Microsoft isn't going to fix anything that's gonna help Bear411 users.

P.S. Bear411 is working for me in IE7 just fine.  Certainly I don't mind seeing more people switch to Firefox.  I just hate miseducating the public.  It's a pet-peeve of mine.

He's also got it backwards. Some Web sites aren't compatible with IE7. :)

Go Firefox!

Here at AOL, all internal financial applications are incompatible with IE7... and with Firefox, even though Firefox's development was largely funded by AOL. It's exasperating.

At least we all have the perfect excuse if someone ever accuses us of ignoring them on Bear411. "Dude, sorry, I was using IE7!"

The same issue happens at [the major pharmaceutical where I work]. It happens every time there's a new major release to browser, OS, middleware... or there's a decision to switch default browser or other configuration.

We still have utilities that flip the default browser between IE and Netscape 4, for Chrissake.

We're still waiting for our core tools to be compliant with IE7 and we're a company that makes its living using Microsoft's products (sigh)...

Vista was released today and we have heard zero about how well our products work in that environment...

Let me know if you'd like KFAD to lend some muscle to the 411 exodus...

I'm on bearciti and ready to unload 411 should BC take off... I still find it clunky though.

I've been using IE7 for months and have never had a problem with Bear411. I was surprised by that message, too.

Yeah, it works for me too!

Beat ya!!!!
And I used it for BLATANT self promotion.
:P
LOL

Same message on eurowoof (which is bear411/bearworld)

I liked this bit the best;
"We advice you to download, install and use the FIREFOX web browser which works fine with the EUROWOOF.com chat."

Wonder if they're getting commision? :D

Whaddya expect from the Walmart of bear personals? Just say no to Bear411.

Bear411 sucks for a lot of reasons. But all the others suck worse.

BMB has a great interface, but the chat is not as easy as 411.

Heheh. I wouldn't know anything about Bear411's chat. Butty Bear deleted our profiles years ago without so much as a response about why. I'll stick to AIM for chat, thanks.

This message on bear411 is a clear indication that standards support in Internet Explorer is getting better.

it says the same on eurowoof.com too

Can you imagine the gall of MS making a product that isn't compatible with Bear411! *gaspz0rz*!

Typical Greg...the Universe revolves around Bear411...le sigh.

I have always felt if you're going to put up a Website, at least have the intelligence to check your spelling and grammar, especially if you're asking people to pay to use all the features of your site.

It's called "professionalism." Honestly, if you were to go into a business and expect a service from them, and saw this kind of misuse of language, how much would you want to patronize them? I'd feel like I was dealing with a bunch of amateurs out to make a quick buck off of an unsuspecting public...

I am stunned by the sheer number of spelling and grammar errors in such a short little blurb:

For instance, it should be: "every site" or "all sites" not "every sites."

The last time I checked, "recommends" is spelled without an "a" in it. "Recommands" isn't even a proper word in English, unless you're trying to say someone was issuing commands again in which case it would be spelled "re-commands," with a hyphen.

Furthermore: It should be "NOT to" rather than "to NOT."

And: "fix that problem" or "fix those problems" not "fix that problems."

And: "We advise you" not "We advice you."

And: "Web" is always written with a capital "W" when referring to the World Wide Web, because it's a shortened form of a proper name.

Hell, a third-grader could've done a better job at writing this notice.

Lastly, it is the Website author's responsibility to ensure their site is compatible with the browser(s) they expect their patrons to be using, not the other way around. For these guys to expect Microsoft to "fix" IE 7 so it can work with their (probably) faulty code is myopic at best, and just plain stupid at worst.

Maybe I'll just dump my Bear411 profile in protest of such abject stupidity and hubris!

Honestly, how did the person who wrote that even manage to graduate from High School?

I think he's French Canadian.

Still, agreed... if you're paying for a site, there oughtta be some grammar checking...

And I completely agree... it's the website author's responsibility to make sure their site is compatible.

Interesting. From Wikipedia:

The Associated Press Stylebook, Reuters, Microsoft, academia, and dictionaries such as Oxford and Merriam-Webster use the two-word, capitalised spelling "Web site."

The Canadian Oxford Dictionary and the Canadian Press Stylebook list "website" and "web page" as the preferred spellings.

I was taught "Website" in college. :) (Yes, I was in college when the World Wide Web was becoming a public kinda thing. I'm old.)

This just makes me want to create the inaugural edition of "Find That Grammar Mistake!"

"100% Bear Profiles with Face"
".com EVERY DAY ACCESS!" - Well, there's no grammar mistake here, I just have no idea what the fuck he's trying to communicate.
"Chat 24h/24 with thousands Bears from EVERY WORLD COUNTRY" - The Amazing Greg has created 17 more days each week!
"View all the Bears additional PHOTOS."
"To avoid you to remember your code each time you login the site you must save your Priority Access code into your profile."

maybe microsoft will fix his intelligence level while they're at it.

that bear411 app is so lame, why are da bearz still using it ?

i left this message for buddy:
"your comment about IE7 is idiotic, you need to remove it. It is your site that is at fault."
how long will it take until my account is kicked off ?

oh well...

I wonder what functionality is exposed in IE7 that Mr Bear411 doesn't want out in the wild.

Here's one after testing for a few minutes: you log in and log out, and you can still browse people online for as long as you want! No three-page limit before you get the nagging login page.

I suspect the site doesn't handle cookies well--or doesn't properly sniff for IE. It's be curious to change the IE user agent string back to IE6 and compare the differences in site behavior.

Oh, and another B411 hidden feature: any message containing the string 'ugly' will not be delivered. You can bet there are more hidden sniffs of your messages on the site. (Props go to someone else for finding this out--it wasn't me).

OK, my first hypothesis is false: on Firefox, you still can browse online profiles after 'quitting'.

But that exposed something more: on IE7, URLs to various popup windows are exposed... like you can send a message to http://www.bear411.com/messenger/getmessages.php?frompallist=1&action=compose&recipientname=sluggobear once you've logged in... from a basic browser window.

I suspect that a number of IE7 security fixes that were implemented to prevent cross-site scripting expoits have blocked Bear411 functionality.

In fact, it'd be fairly trivial to write a simple .js page that logs you in to Bear411, then use a web page of your own to access your pal list and manage your chat sessions, including support for basic things like copy/paste in message windows of strings greater than 12 characters. Sounds like a fun weekend project :-)

Wow, good work!! I wonder if he knows that, or if he just wanted people to stop bugging him.

Hmmm I wonder if people simply weren't seeing pop-ups due to the pop-up blocker?

(I think you can copy/paste in message windows again now.)

So, I had done some tinerking with Greasemonkey & writing some scripts for b411.. one of which was the copy/paste. ;-) Take 'em if you like here: http://www.realaustinman.com/misc/bear411.html

I'm not proud of the chat popper.. needs some work to find a semaphore available between the two windows.

The words 'bearciti' and 'bearwww' are also censored.

Also another interesting note to make is when a paying member logs in, then logs out, and a non-paying member logs in they will get the priority access features enabled temporary for a couple sessions even after the browser has been closed.

I say just switch to BearCiti and forget all about Bear411 ;-)

Wow! I had never used it before. I actually like the interface!

Will give it a try...

firefox rules my face still. saw you on bearciti. and found out you had an eLJay. thats badass. so i hope that you dont mind me adding ya. :)

For me, firefox 2.0 hasn't worked on either home PC (Win 2000) or my work PC (Win XP).

I finally moved to IE 7, in desperation, but the link to new messages on the Pals list was unavailable.

Complaints to Greg's profile have gone unanswered, though they seem to have rolled back their frames abomination, somewhat. (Still no pop-up windows.)

I think now "paid members" are as pissed off as unpaid...

Heya guys, I still did not manage to create a profile on bear4/11, I suppose it's because i am a chaser. Well, I stick to BearCity, they are friendly and accept all and bears and chubs and chasers. As far as I know there is no censorship on online messages and it's fun to chat in their chat and cam room.
Well, there are TOS but TOS are everywhere.
HUGS to all
